Regis Le Bris says several key Sunderland players require late checks before Sunday’s derby at Newcastle United.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats, set for their first visit to St James’ Park in a decade, will assess Robin Roefs, Dan Ballard, Nordi Mukiele and Enzo Le Fée.

Roefs is dealing with a hamstring issue from last month’s draw with Bournemouth. Ballard was withdrawn just after the hour during last weekend’s defeat to Brighton.

Le Fée missed that game, and Mukiele has not featured since a calf complaint at Fulham on 22 February.

Le Bris confirmed Jocelin Ta Bi, Nilson Angulo, Bertrand Traore and Romain Mundle will be unavailable.

He stressed decisions will be purely medical, with no unnecessary risks, noting seven games still follow this fixture and an international break could aid rehab if needed. He also said the occasion will not sway selection despite a three-week gap before the next Premier League match.

Ballard’s problem was described as hamstring discomfort. Le Bris cautioned that even a short cameo could risk an absence of eight or nine weeks, while praising injured players for pushing to be involved.
