Liverpool Make Cody Gakpo Stance Clear Amid Tottenham Interest

Liverpool are not in the mood to help a rival. According to the Daily Mail, the club have made it clear they have no intention of selling Cody Gakpo, even after Tottenham registered their interest in the Dutch forward. That is the right starting point for any discussion. Liverpool have already lost Mohamed Salah this summer, and when you remove elite output from the frontline, you do not casually open the door for another departure.

The report states that Liverpool are “looking to add attacking quality rather than lose it”, which tells you everything about the current thinking at Anfield. The pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s “£145million-rated Bradley Barcola” fits that logic. This is a squad still being shaped, and the club clearly see Gakpo as part of the solution, not a tradeable asset.

Cody Gakpo Value Remains High

There is no need to overcomplicate this. Gakpo is 27, he is under contract until 2030, and Liverpool know the market. The report says “it would take a huge sum to change Liverpool’s stance”. That sounds obvious, because it is. Players with his level of experience, tactical flexibility and proven output cost serious money.

His numbers dipped last season, with “only nine goals”, and that will be used by outsiders as an argument. Internally, it clearly is not. Liverpool remember that “His best season, 2024-25, saw him bang in 18 goals.” They also remember they paid PSV “£44m for Gakpo in 2022.” Replace him now, in this market, and it almost certainly costs far more.

Tottenham Spending Adds Context

Tottenham’s interest is understandable. They have already been aggressive under Roberto De Zerbi, signing Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. The report notes that signing Gakpo could take Spurs’ spending “close to or even beyond £300m”. Fine. Liverpool still do not have to play along.

Spurs are also tracking other attacking options, including Omar Marmoush and Savinho. That matters, because it reduces any sense of leverage. Liverpool can simply say no and move on.

Our View

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this feels straightforward. If the club are serious about remaining competitive in the Premier League and Europe, selling Cody Gakpo to Tottenham makes little sense. You do not weaken your own attack, especially after losing Mohamed Salah, and especially not for the benefit of a direct rival.

There will be fans frustrated by Gakpo’s last season. Nine goals is not enough if he is playing regularly in advanced areas. That much is fair. But there is also a danger in reducing a player to one underwhelming campaign. Gakpo has shown he can produce, and the reference to his 18-goal 2024-25 season matters. That version of him still exists, and a better structure around him could easily bring it back.

The other point is market reality. Replacing proven international attackers is expensive. Liverpool know that. If Barcola costs £145m, then selling Gakpo only creates another problem to solve. The smart move is to add quality around him, not start another rebuild inside the forward line.

In short, this report is reassuring. Liverpool need more attackers, not fewer, and keeping Gakpo is the sensible call.
