As Manchester City close in on a new contractual agreement with Savinho, a new report has revealed the senior figure who personally blocked the Brazilian’s summer exit.
The 21-year-old has been the subject of major interest since securing a place in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, with Tottenham his most persistent suitors in the most recent transfer window.
Despite pursuits from North London, Manchester City were unwavering in their stance that the player would not be sold and that decision, according to new reporting, came from the very top of the club.
The 2023 departure of Cole Palmer from City to Chelsea proved costly in hindsight, as the England international rapidly blossomed into one of the Premier League’s standout forwards, and the Etihad hierarchy are now determined not to repeat that mistake.
Manchester City have shown commitment to fast-tracking discussions over a fresh long-term contract for Savinho, with reports suggesting his new agreement will extend through to 2031, further underlining the club’s belief in his potential to play a central role for years to come.
According to the information of GIVEMESPORT’s Ben Jacobs, City Football Group and Manchester City’s chief executive officer Ferran Soriano blocked a potential summer exit for star forward Savinho.
It is explained that the feeling within the club was selling the Brazilian could have led to a similar scenario as when Cole Palmer joined Chelsea in 2023, before becoming one of the club and division’s star performers.
Manchester City are said to believe that Savinho’s ceiling is ‘so high that it would have been a mistake to sell him at any price’ despite Tottenham being prepared to offer over €70 million for the player.
As for the viewpoint from manager Pep Guardiola, the Catalan was reportedly also always in favour of keeping Savinho within his first-team squad, even amid the prospect of adding Real Madrid’s Rodygo had an exit happened.
Looking ahead, Savinho’s development will be watched closely not only by Manchester City fans but also by rival clubs who may revisit their interest in the highly-rated Brazil international in future windows.
Should the Brazilian continue on his current trajectory, his valuation could easily eclipse the €70 million Tottenham were seemingly willing to pay, leaving Manchester City vindicated in their decision to hold firm.
With competition for places fierce in Pep Guardiola’s forward line, particularly alongside the likes of Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, and Oscar Bobb, the Brazilian will have to consistently deliver to cement his starting role.
However, with a new contract on the horizon and the backing of both the manager and the club’s top brass, the message is clear that Savinho is viewed as a cornerstone of Manchester City’s long-term future.
