Riyad Mahrez becomes Algeria’s all-time AFCON top scorer with brace against Sudan

Riyad Mahrez became Algeria’s all-time Africa Cup of Nations top scorer after his brace in a 3-0 win over Sudan on Wednesday, taking his tally to eight.

L'Équipe notes the 34-year-old’s response came after recent criticism. He was also named man of the match.

Mahrez now leads Algeria’s AFCON scoring chart ahead of Lakhdar Belloumi on six. His eight goals are spread across four editions, one in 2015, two in 2017, three in 2019 and two in 2025.

The winger is Algeria’s second most-capped player with 108 appearances, behind Aïssa Mandi on 111. This is his sixth AFCON and he ended a six-year wait for a tournament goal, having not scored in 2022 or 2024.

Algeria top Group E and face Burkina Faso on Sunday at 18:30. Burkina Faso beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1.
