Roma want to shore up their squad in a pair of positions in January to fuel their title aspirations, but they’ll have to get creative, as they won’t have much of a budget.
According to Il Messaggero, they are plotting to use a pair of their youngsters who aren’t playing consistently as bargaining chips to address some needs.
For instance, Roma have been active in the Giovane sweepstakes. Verona almost onboarded Tommaso Baldanzi last summer, but the Giallorossi decided to keep him at the last moment. He has made just six appearances and was excluded from the Europa League. The Italian playmaker could be utilized in a swap for the striker or for Alphadjo Cissè, who’s on loan at Catanzaro.
Moreover, Niccolò Pisilli has maintained a strong rapport with Daniele De Rossi, who could ask Genoa to try to sign him. Instead, Gian Piero Gasperini is high on Morten Frendrup. Their midfield will lose Neil El Aynaoui for a while due to the 2025 AFCON. Bologna could also be interested in their starlet. The Giallorossi could ask for Remo Freuler or Giovanni Fabbian in return.
As for Joshua Zirkzee, the two teams are in touch, but a few factors complicate the deal, like Benjamin Sesko’s injury and Bryan Mbuemo’s international duties with Cameroon. The capital club is keeping an eye on Tottenham’s Mathys Tel as a fallback.
Trades are always easier said than done. They don’t really need another agile lefty attacker, even though Giovane has a high ceiling. There’s a gulf between Pisilli and Frendrup’s valuations. They’d have an easier time cashing in on their prospects and reinvesting the sums.
