Rooney sharply criticizes Amorim after the Manchester derby
Wayne Rooney, the legendary former Manchester United striker, has expressed deep concern for his old club following their crushing 0-3 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and a disastrous start to the Premier League season.
Speaking on his BBC show, Rooney claimed that Ruben Amorim's footballing philosophy is making matters worse:
I want to support the coach and the players as much as possible, but if he is honest with himself, he'll realize that everything has gotten worse.
Manchester United have started the season with just four points from four matches, their worst opening since 1992. Since Amorim's arrival in November, the team has collected 31 points from 31 league games—a tally Rooney deems "worthy of a relegation team." Rooney added:
It's very hard for me to say that we're seeing progress or any signs that will soon lead to results." The English press immediately interpreted Rooney's remarks as a "license to sack" for Amorim.
The debate continues in Manchester, especially regarding Amorim's 3-4-3 system, which had previously proven effective at Sporting Lisbon.
