Saudi Arabia has been capturing headlines across the soccer world over the last few years.

Whether it was the stunning upset victory over Argentina in the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the rapid growth of the Saudi Pro League, or the successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the Green Falcons have become impossible to ignore.

Now, Saudi Arabia heads to North America looking to further polish their name in the soccer world.

How Saudi Arabia Qualified

Saudi Arabia’s path through the grueling Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers was quite exhausting.

They entered qualification in the second round and were drawn into a group alongside Jordan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. On paper, Saudi Arabia was expected to walk the group since none of the other teams in the group had ever qualified for a World Cup.

Instead, Jordan shocked the region by finishing first and securing automatic progression, forcing Saudi Arabia into second place and into the third round.

There, they found themselves in a group with Japan, Australia, Indonesia, China, and Bahrain. A top-two finish would have guaranteed direct qualification. However, Saudi Arabia could only manage third place, meaning they were forced into a fourth qualifying round.

Thankfully, this time they got the job done.

Saudi Arabia topped a group containing Iraq and Indonesia, finally securing their ticket to the World Cup. Not the most dominant campaign, but it got the job done.

Key Players

Salem Al-Dawsari

The national hero of the Green Falcons. For years, Salem Al-Dawsari has been an iconic presence for both Al Hilal and the national team. Globally recognized for his spectacular, match-winning strike against eventual champions Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, the veteran winger remains one of Saudi Arabia’s most efficient creative sources.

Entering his third World Cup, Al-Dawsari is a two-time AFC Player of the Year. His skill of cutting inside from the left flank, and ice-cold composure in high-stakes moments make him the irreplaceable leader of this squad. As captain, his experience will be critical in a group that has nations that will try to bait Saudi Arabia into making mistakes.

Saud Abdulhamid

In a squad overwhelmingly composed of Saudi Pro League players, Saud Abdulhamid is the only exception. Abdulhamid made history by moving to Europe, eventually helping out his club RC Lens in their most recent Coupe de France triumph.

Abdulhamid is a modern fullback. He is blessed with a tireless engine, elite recovery pace, and the ability to impact the game on both ends of the pitch. Against the lethal wide forwards of Spain and Uruguay, like Nico Williams, Abdulhamid will be heavily tested. On the opposite spectrum, his overlapping runs will serve as a crucial outlet to relieve opposition pressure.

Firas Al-Buraikan

If Saudi Arabia intends to escape Group H, they must be absolutely clinical in converting their chances, and that responsibility falls to Firas Al-Buraikan. T

he Al Ahli striker has scored 15 goals for his national side since debuting in 2019, including five strikes in the qualifying campaign. He has consistently proven himself as one of the most lethal domestic finishers in the Saudi Pro League, routinely going toe-to-toe with international superstars in the scoring charts.

Potential Breakout Player: Musab Al-Juwayr

The 22-year-old Al-Qadsiah midfielder enjoyed a sensational breakout campaign, finishing with six goals and 11 assists this season. Already boasting six international goals, Al-Juwayr has quickly become one of Saudi soccer’s brightest young stars. At this international tournament, Musab Al-Juwayr is expected to announce himself to the world. The highly touted Al Qadsiah midfielder is the youngest player named to the 2026 Saudi Arabia squad, set to turn 23 during the tournament itself.

Coach Profile: Georgios Donis

The appointment of Georgios Donis to replace Hervé Renard in April 2026, just under two months before the tournament, was a bold maneuver by the Saudi Federation. The German-born Greek tactician has spent nearly a decade managing prominent Saudi clubs like Al Hilal, Al Wehda, Al Fateh, and Al Khaleej. His understanding of the Saudi footballing ecosystem means he already knows the strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and cultural tendencies of much of his squad. He speaks very little Arabic, as he typically relies on a translator for complex tactical instructions and official press engagements.

Saudi Arabia at the World Cup

This summer marks Saudi Arabia’s seventh appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Over the last three decades, they have steadily established themselves as one of Asia’s most consistent international powers. While many fans remember the unforgettable victory over Argentina in Qatar, Saudi Arabia ultimately failed to advance from the group stage in 2022.

Their greatest World Cup achievement remains the 1994 tournament.

Coincidentally hosted in the United States, that competition saw Saudi Arabia reach the Round of 16 behind the legendary performances of Saeed Al-Owairan, whose unforgettable solo goal against Belgium remains one of the greatest goals in World Cup history. Now, 32 years later, Saudi Arabia returns to American soil hoping to reach the knockout stage once again.

Random Facts

  1. Defender Saud Abdulhamid is the only player in Saudi Arabia’s 2026 World Cup squad who plays club soccer outside the country. The remaining 25 players all compete in the Saudi Pro League or Saudi domestic football pyramid.
  2. Despite only being appointed head coach a short time before the World Cup, Georgios Donis has previously managed more than half of the national team roster during his lengthy coaching career in Saudi Arabia.
