Philippe Coutinho said in a social media post on Wednesday that he is leaving Vasco, prompting coverage around the world.

Outlets noted his request to terminate his contract and revisited a career that has taken him to Barcelona, Inter, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Spain’s Mundo Deportivo described the exit as a scandal and said that, once confirmed, he would be available as a free agent seeking a last chance to rediscover his best form. It added that, at 33, he dreams of a final World Cup, though that currently seems unlikely given his low output and lack of minutes at the highest level.

In England, many outlets returned to advice Jürgen Klopp offered in 2018 when Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona. Klopp urged him to stay and cement his status at Liverpool, warning that at Barcelona, Bayern or Real Madrid he would be just another player.

The Mirror headlined that Coutinho would be out of contract and that Klopp’s advice had again proved true. The Express ran a similar line, saying his contract would be torn up and Klopp was right.
