Andreas Schjelderup has been named UEFA player of the week after a standout display in Benfica’s win over Real Madrid. The 21-year-old had already taken man of the match.

According to Glorioso 1904, the award followed a UEFA fan vote opened after the final Champions League matchday. He topped a shortlist featuring João Pedro of Chelsea, Malik Tillman of Bayer Leverkusen and Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool.

The Norwegian winger scored twice against the Spaniards, both set up by Vangelis Pavlidis, who also converted a penalty. It was his first multi-goal game for Benfica.

The performance could prove a turning point for a player linked with a departure from Benfica. The club are now said to have reconsidered a sale and want him to remain.

This season Schjelderup, valued at 14 million euros, has made 26 appearances for Benfica, 13 in Liga Portugal Betclic, eight in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 1,236 minutes he has scored four goals and supplied three assists.
