Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has backed fans boycotting the 2026 World Cup held in the United States.
The US is one of three nations hosting this summer's tournament alongside Canada and Mexico but recent actions by the country's government – including threatening to invade Greenland and the murder of citizens by border patrol agents among other numerous incidents – have led to some fans boycotting the event.
Perhaps many of those supporters will be surprised by Blatter's backing considering the former president's status as football's 'bogeyman' – a title that current chief Gianni Infantino has managed to truly make his own in recent years.
"If we consider everything we’ve discussed, there’s only one piece of advice for fans: Stay away from the USA! You’ll see it better on TV anyway," Blatter said in an interview with Der Bund as reported by The Associated Press.
"And upon arrival, fans should expect that if they don’t please the officials, they’ll be put straight on the next flight home. If they’re lucky."
The World Cup is set to begin on June 11th with the first games being held in Mexico.
