In a major wake up call for football fans around the globe, Sergio Busquets could soon be hanging up his boots.
Busquets, one of the most iconic figures in Barcelona’s modern history, is set to bring down the curtain on his playing career at the end of the current MLS season, reports COPE.
The report adds that the Spanish midfielder has already made the decision to retire once Inter Miami’s campaign concludes later this year, either in November or December, depending on the club’s playoff run.
Busquets is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. A product of La Masia, he made his debut for Barcelona in 2008 under Pep Guardiola and went on to establish himself as an irreplaceable figure at the heart of the midfield.
In total, Busquets played 722 matches for Barça, making him the third-most capped player in the club’s history, only behind Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez.

During his time at Camp Nou, he won 32 trophies, including three Champions League titles and nine La Liga crowns.
Given the recent trend of Spanish players becoming excellent coaches, one would expect Busquets to remain involved with football and possibly even become a coach later on.
As per the report, nothing has been decided, but a return to Barcelona in some capacity is not out of the question.
Given his status as a club legend and his deep ties to the institution, the possibility of seeing Busquets back in Catalonia – whether in a coaching, ambassadorial, or technical role – remains open.
The report further adds that Busquets intends to announce his retirement through a video message, just as he did when he announced his departure from Barcelona.
