Lecce are still without a home victory and Verona yet to celebrate any success in Serie A this season after a hard-fought stalemate.

This was a real relegation battle, but the hosts were boosted by a surprise victory away to Fiorentina. Balthazar Pierret, Matias Perez and Gaby Jean were still on the absentee list. Hellas were still looking for their first win of the season, sitting in penultimate place. Suat Serdar, Daniel Oyegoke, Yellu Santiago and Tomas Suslov remained unavailable.

Lameck Banda scuffed his finish after turning Armal Bella-Kotchap inside out, while Tete Morente was denied by a desperate Domagoj Bradaric sliding tackle, having taken one too many touches on the Medon Berisha through ball.

Kialonda Gaspar went for goal rather than find Giovane relatively unmarked, then Banda saw his ferocious curler palmed out of the far top corner by Lorenzo Montipò.

Wladimiro Falcone had his gloves stung at the near post by Gift Orban and Berisha spotted Montipò off his line to attempt an audacious lob from midfield.

Nikola Stulic almost surprised Montipò, who made the reaction save with his legs to deny the half-volley from the edge of the area.

Belghali didn’t get enough on the Orban volleyed assist to trouble Falcone, then Martin Frese’s header was wide on his cross.

The referee pointed to the spot when Riccardo Sottil with his first touch of the game rolled across from the left for Francesco Camarda, who went down under the Bella-Kotchap tackle. The Verona defender insisted he got the ball first by a matter of millimetres, which was confirmed following the VAR On-Field Review.

Camarda tested Montipò with a snapshot on the turn from distance, then the Verona goalkeeper had his gloves stung by a powerful Sottil strike from the edge of the area.

Niasse hit the upright for Verona at the 89th minute, but it wouldn’t have counted anyway, as Amine Sarr was offside in the build-up.
