Shea Charles made his first Southampton pre-season appearance on Friday, with Leeds United having lodged an improved, undisclosed and final bid that will remain on the table. United have reached their ceiling and will not go higher.
"On the back of the season that he’s played, I think it’s more than clear that there’s interest. I’m happy to have him around at the very moment," said Southampton manager Tonda Eckert to the Daily Echo.
"I can only say how well Shea is in the group and he’s been excellent from the first day since he came back. I think he’s shown today that he’s on a good level to perform and I think the rest is for the club to sort."
Leeds’ take-it-or-leave-it stance leaves the decision with Southampton and the player, although the club ultimately holds control and talks do not appear smooth.
United are likely to monitor the response from his camp. His stance is unclear, though talks would be unlikely to be this advanced if he opposed Elland Road.
It is very unlikely Charles stays this summer, and Eckert, who was at the centre of the Spygate scandal earlier this year, struck a non-committal tone.
The 22-year-old debuted for Northern Ireland at 18 and has topped 100 senior appearances in four years. He scored against Liverpool, Arsenal and in the Championship play-offs last season.
Such character references will please Daniel Farke, who prioritises good dressing-room personalities. There could be further twists and no guarantee it goes Leeds’ way.
