This has been a nightmare year for supporters of Sheffield Wednesday.

Since the end of the 2024-25 season, the club has lost a promising young manager, been consistently late with paying their wages, had one of the stands at their stadium closed for safety reasons, and now sit one place off the bottom of the Championship table, with just one point from their first four matches of the season.

The club currently has a threadbare squad, and the tight fee restrictions placed on them by the EFL only allowed one player to be brought in on transfer deadline day to try and give the team a better chance of being competitive this season. It's a desperate position to be in, and there still doesn't sem to be any end in sight.

Wednesday fans are understandably irate over the way in which their club has been mismanaged, and with owner Dejphon Chansiri giving little indication of wanting to sell the club that he's running into the ground, protests against him have been growing since the summer.

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust calls for another boycott of the club

They have called for a boycott of Wednesday's Third Round match against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup, which is due to be played on the 16th September, stating that, "we’ll provide alternative fan-led viewing arrangements where Wednesdayites can gather together, share the match, and create a true Wednesday atmosphere – without a penny reaching the chairman."

The Trust have been at the forefront of the protests against Chansiri since the summer. Their first boycott was of club merchandise and refreshments inside the stadium, but these protests have been slowly escalating as the severity of Wednesday's position has become increasingly clear. The intention of these boycotts is to "starve" Chansiri out of the club. This hasn't happened yet, but this doesn't mean that they won't continue until he leaves.

Fan protests have brought considerable attention to Sheffield Wednesday's plight

Fan protests have certainly increased awareness of Sheffield Wednesday's current position as the club's position has deteriorated since the end of the 2024-25 season. Their opening match of the League season away to Leicester was marked by supporters refusing to enter The King Power Stadium until five minutes after kick off.

The action was broadcast live on Sky Sports, and Wednesday fans received thunderous applause from the Leicester fans when they did enter the stadium. This was followed up with a mock funeral held in Hillsborough Park, near the stadium, ahead of their first home match of the season against Stoke City.

The boycott of the Leeds EFL Cup match was a success. The crowd for the match was reported as 7,801, and the majority of those present were away fans. Wednesday won the match after a penalty shootout, and a home tie against Grimsby was their reward for having done so.

But while the club managed to pay everybody on time at the end of August, the paucity of the club's squad in terms of senior professionals remains a damning indictment of Chansiri's mismanagement of the club. There seems little question that these protests will be continuing - and most likely louder and louder - until the club has been sold.
