Matias Soulé clarified in an interview that he’s not abandoning Argentina, despite the lack of consideration, to switch to Italy, ceasing the chatter sparked by some declarations by his agent. He also discussed his Roma future, talking with Il Messaggero.
“Nothing has changed. I feel and am Argentine. I told it to Luciano Spalletti too, whom I thank. Playing for them is still my idea. Maybe my representative was a little angry when he saw the latest call-ups by Lionel Scaloni. However, no one from the Italian Federation has contacted me again. If they did, I would say ‘no, thanks.’ I know it’s not easy to be selected by La Seleccion because they have many great players. It’s obviously pleasing and a source of pride that a strong and historic national team like the Azzurri is interested, but I won’t change my mind. I’d like to represent the country I was born in.”
Soulé also has clear ideas about his future at the club level.
“I see myself at Roma long-term. I think it’s everybody’s dream to reach certain goals with this jersey. If I close my eyes, I imagine myself here for life. Then, I’m aware that things can always change, but that would be my wish.”
Soulé weighed on Gian Piero Gasperini’s recent remarks about the Giallorossi’s level.
“I think he’s being truthful. We’re not yet Champions League-caliber, but we want to get there. It’s paramount for us and our primary goal. We must not get a big head. These are only the first matches, and we just need to focus on being consistent. The Inter clash will be an important test to see where we are.”
