Soule reveals ‘best’ piece of advice from Ranieri: ‘Go back to playing simply’ | OneFootball

Matias Soule has revealed the ‘best’ piece of advice he received from Claudio Ranieri during his time in the Roma dugout, what he has learned from Gian Piero Gasperini so far, and has discussed his relationship with Paulo Dybala ahead of the Derby della Capitale against rivals Lazio on Sunday.

Lazio and Roma will face each other in the Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimipco in the early Serie A kick-off on Sunday, beginning at 11.30 BST.

There is little need for introduction to the Derby della Capitale for Soule, who is already aware of the importance of the fixture to the club and its supporters.

“The derby is a special week and one that is different to all the others. That said, we have to stay calm, even in this game,” he said in an interview with DAZN (reported via Corriere dello Sport).

“If we give 100% in every game, we have to give twice as much in this one. The nerves will be there, but I’m convinced that all those anxieties go away the second the game starts.”

Soule spoke positively about his time working under Claudio Ranieri last season, and has revealed the best piece of advice he received from the 73-year-old.

“I thank Ranieri, I found continuity and the trust I wanted under him. The first few months of last season weren’t easy. He gave us peace of mind and told us to play simply. This is the best piece of advice I got from him: When you’re finding it difficult, go back to playing simply, and from there, you’ll go back to doing great things.”

And what has life been like in the capital since Gian Piero Gasperini took over?

“I was struck by his attacking mentality. Play forwards, don’t be caught out and find your man. It leaves you with a lot of freedom and this allows you to express yourself in the best way, especially for players like me who love to get the ball and create dangerous moments.”

And what can Soule learn from his compatriot and close friend Paulo Dybala?

“You just have to watch him every day to learn. He sets a great example. He’s still untouchable in certain aspects. His vision of the game and the way he controls it, he never gets it wrong. Technically, he’s a champion.

“He helps me a lot in general and we’re becoming closer friends with each passing day. He’s like an older brother when we’re on the pitch, he passes leadership onto me. Then, when we get home, he becomes a best friend.”
