Southampton are continuing to push for a play-off place after defeating Championship leaders Coventry City away from home.

The visitors took the lead early into the second half when Carl Rushworth had to make a save to stop Kuryu Matsuki's cross from finding the corner with Cyle Larin unable to get a touch to it. However, Rushworth's save was pounced upon by Flynn Downes who converted the rebound from close range.

The Sky Blues may have a commanding lead at the top of the table but they pushed for an equaliser but were stung again by a late set-piece. James Bree sent in a corner from the left that Coventry were unable to clear with the ball seeming to bounce kindly off the foot of Matsuki and into the net.

Frank Lampard's team gave themselves a chance after being awarded a penalty in the 90th minute. Substitute Victor Torp kept his cool to reduce the deficit.

Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz hadn't been able to keep Torp's spot-kick out but he was needed to make some last-ditch saves in the fine seconds of stoppage time to ensure his side took all three points.

That result means the Saints keep pace with Wrexham as Tonda Eckert's side push for a promotion spot. For Coventry, this result wasn't the worst and they still hold a seven-point lead over Middlesbrough who suffered a 96th-minute equaliser at home to Bristol City.
