Spain’s win over Uruguay sealed top spot in Group H at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and a seeded berth in the round of 32. It came at a price, with Yeremy Pino thought to be out for the rest of the competition due to a clavicle injury, and Nico Williams finishing with muscular discomfort and set for medical tests in the coming hours.

Concern around Williams is high. Luis de la Fuente said they must wait and the issue might be overload or fatigue, yet the Athletic Club winger left Estadio Akron in Guadalajara visibly limping and downcast. Cadena SER reports the feeling is not positive and he could miss the remainder of the tournament.

Uruguay’s physical approach may have left Spain without two key wingers, subject to confirmation. If Pino and Williams are sidelined, De la Fuente would lose two options out wide.

With Lamine Yamal established on the right and Víctor Muñoz still a doubt, Alejandro Baena has strong claims to keep his place on the left after his goal and MVP display in the final group game.

Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Gavi could also cover that flank if required.

Williams has endured a difficult, injury-hit season after turning down Barcelona last summer. He arrived at the World Cup managing a knock, hoping to build rhythm during the group stage, and this setback could leave him without further minutes in such a short tournament.

Spain play their round-of-32 tie on Thursday 2 July at 21.00 CEST. The opponents will be the winners of Austria or Algeria on Sunday at 04.00 CEST in Kansas City, with a draw favouring Austria.
