It has taken just five games in the new season for Alvaro Carreras to firmly establish himself as the first-choice left-back at Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old defender arrived from SL Benfica for a significant fee of €50 million. Real Madrid had tried to bring him in before the FIFA Club World Cup, but it was not possible as the Portuguese club refused to sell at the time.

During that tournament in the summer, Fran Garcia made a big impact under Xabi Alonso and had strengthened his case for a starting spot once the season started. But, Carreras has blown away any talks of competition and become the undisputed starter.

Spain call-up on the horizon?

Now, according to MARCA, Carreras is also on the radars of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente and is being considered for a possible call-up.

Carreras has never played for the Spanish national team but has nine caps for the Under-21 side, although his last appearance for them came in 2023.

But, his early performances at Real Madrid have been so positive that the 22-year-old starlet has forced himself into De la Fuente’s consideration.

It must be noted that competition for the left-back position in the Spain squad is intense. The manager currently trusts Marc Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo as his preferred options while Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is also waiting in the wings.

So, Carreras will need to keep performing at this level consistently in order to break into the La Roja squad in the future.

The Spaniard, with his performance, has ensured that the debate around his €50 million has ended. Now it will be up to him to keep shining consistently and force his way into the national team.
