The Finalissima between European champions Spain and Copa América winners Argentina, scheduled for 27 March in Qatar, has been cancelled because of the war in the Middle East.

UEFA confirmed the decision and said no alternative date could be agreed. It proposed playing on 27 March at the Santiago Bernabéu, or staging two games in Madrid and Buenos Aires with equal ticket allocations in Madrid, but Argentina rejected both options.

Guarantees were then sought that the match could be held on 27 or 30 March at a neutral European venue, which was also turned down.

Argentina preferred to play after the World Cup, 11 June to 19 July, a period when Spain had no available dates. It later suggested 31 March, which proved unworkable.

Argentina won the last Finalissima in 2022, beating Italy 3-0 in London. They are also the reigning world champions, having triumphed in Qatar in 2022.

Other major events have been moved or cancelled because of the conflict, with the Bahrain and Jeddah Formula one Grands Prix in mid-April both called off. Qatar’s MotoGP round, set for the weekend of 12 April, has been pushed back to 8 November.
