France’s sports minister Marina Ferrari says there is no desire to boycott the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, despite mounting calls to protest Donald Trump’s foreign policy.

According to L'Équipe, Ferrari told reporters on Tuesday that, at this stage, the ministry has no wish to boycott the tournament, which is scheduled for 11 June to 19 July. France are currently expected to take part next summer.

Speaking at her New Year address to the media, she added that she would not prejudge what might happen and called for sport and politics to be kept separate. She said the World Cup is hugely important for fans.

On Tuesday, MP Éric Coquerel urged FIFA to stage the competition only in Mexico and Canada. In a post on X, he accused the United States under Trump of threatening neighbours, undermining international law and planning restrictions on supporters from around 15 countries, as well as LGBT symbols in stadiums.

The 2026 finals are due to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. For now, France’s stance remains unchanged.
