Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has confirmed his intention to keep Brennan Johnson at the club amidst speculation of a January exit.
The Welsh international was a key player for Spurs last season and was the club’s top scorer in the league. However, he has struggled to establish himself under new boss Frank this campaign.
“Yeah, I think Brennan is very important for us,” Frank answered when asked if he would like to keep the winger in January.
“Maybe he didn’t get many minutes, but unfortunately we can only play 11 players.
“We spoke about it before with Mo (Kudus), he’s come in and put his stamp on that right-winger position. Then the left, we tried different solutions, still started quite a few games.
“I think Brennan is an important player for us.”
The Tottenham boss also updated on the fitness of Lucas Bergvall, after the 19-year-old was forced off against Crystal Palace. “Yeah, I hope so (that he is able to play the next game). Of course, we’ll assess him tomorrow.”
Despite Bergvall’s withdrawal, Spurs held on to their advantage to beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park.
The Danish coach reflected: “I really like the desire, the mentality in the team, and the character and the resilience of the team.
“It’s something I said and spoke about a lot, that it’s so important that we have that resilience in the team, because in a long Premier League season, you know, you need to go to a very difficult away ground here and fight, have character, get a clean sheet, win 1-0.”
“I think that was a massive win in many ways. Was it a top performance? No. Is there things we can improve? Yes.”
The only goal of the game came from Archie Gray. It was the 19-year-old’s first goal in senior football.
His manager insisted: “Yeah, definitely Archie is growing. He shows why he has got very good potential in many ways. I think it’s another fine performance overall today.
“Talking about resilience, he made the mistake in the Nottingham game, played another good game against Liverpool, growing as a young man.
“You can just see he was alert. I love that goal, because he was alert. He’s seeing where the ball will land, and he’s ready on it.”
