Spurs are pushing to install Roberto De Zerbi before their 12 April visit to Sunderland after Igor Tudor’s departure, with the club just one point above the relegation zone. De Zerbi is the primary candidate to take charge.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that De Zerbi is now open to evaluating a long-term proposal, with a five-year deal on the table and swift talks expected. Spurs are understood to have stepped up efforts to convince him to start immediately, having initially preferred to begin after the current campaign.

Tudor’s six-week interim spell brought no competitive wins. Spurs confirmed his exit on Sunday, with coaches Tomislav Rogic and Riccardo Ragnacci also leaving, and acknowledged a recent bereavement for Tudor. An update on a successor is to follow.

Assistant Bruno Saltor is overseeing training while many players are on international duty. The aim is to have a head coach in place when the squad reunites to allow a full week of preparation for Sunderland. Sean Dyche has also been linked if De Zerbi declines.

There is doubt over goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who has undergone hernia surgery during the break, though the hope is he can face Sunderland. If not, Antonín Kinský would start for the first time since being withdrawn in the first half of the Champions League first leg at Atletico Madrid. Mathys Tel is a minor doubt after a knock against Nottingham Forest.

Mohammed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur are edging towards full training after thigh issues and could bolster depth, although starts are uncertain. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are targeted to return before the end of the campaign, but a Sunderland appearance looks unlikely. Ben Davies could be back from an ankle injury, while Wilson Odobert is out with a long-term knee problem and Yves Bissouma is a doubt.
