Sunderland are weighing a January loan exit for Arthur Masuaku, but the suggested terms are currently unattractive, with Kristjaan Speakman assessing the approach.

Reports in Belgium say Standard Liège have opened talks to take the left-back on loan without an option or obligation to buy, while asking Sunderland to cover his full wages.

That offers little upside and is unlikely to appeal unless the structure changes. Masuaku is understood to be open to moving for minutes, but Sunderland would lose depth, even with Dennis Cirkin now fit.

Masuaku joined on a free in August after leaving Beşiktaş, returning to English football following seven years at West Ham United. He has played only four times under Régis Le Bris, totalling 217 minutes. The DR Congo international wants regular football with World Cup qualifiers in March.

Standard Liège are actively seeking a left-back, with Alexandro Calut injured and Boli Bolingoli their only senior option.

From Sunderland’s viewpoint, a loan with no purchase clause and wages still on the books brings minimal relief, especially for a fringe player signed on a free. A permanent solution may be considered if he is determined to leave.

Talks remain at an exploratory stage and the deal structure will be decisive. Unless Standard Liège or another club shift their stance, Sunderland are unlikely to rush into an exit that offers little return.
