Stewart Donald replied to co-owner Juan Sartori on social media after Sunderland’s win at Everton kept European hopes alive. According to Sunderland Echo, the exchange followed full time.
Régis Le Bris’ side came from behind to win, with Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fée and Wilson Isidor scoring after the break.
Sartori attended the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium and posted a photo with his daughter. He wrote: “That’s how you fight ’til the end @sunderlandafc. One to remember with Sasha.”
Donald replied on Sartori’s Facebook page: “Maybe Europe, Juan. So pleased for you - hope to catch up soon.” He added a flexed-arm emoji and an OK hand gesture.
Donald had led the consortium that bought the club from Ellis Short in 2018 after relegation to League One, with Sartori joining alongside Charlie Methven.
Donald later sold his majority shareholding, and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became chairman and majority shareholder in 2021. Sartori remained involved and is part of the current ownership structure alongside Louis-Dreyfus.
Donald’s spell remains divisive among supporters, with failure to escape League One and episodes in Sunderland ’Til I Die still debated. Sartori has also faced criticism for those early years despite shifting roles.
The Black Cats now approach the final day with Europe still possible. Sunderland host Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, and must win and hope results elsewhere go their way, with Brentford facing Liverpool and Brighton meeting Manchester United.
