The Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva, STJD, has filed a complaint against Memphis of Corinthians for using a phone on the bench during the 1-1 draw with Flamengo on Sunday.
He is charged under article 258 of the Código Brasileiro de Justiça Desportiva, covering conduct contrary to discipline or sporting ethics, and faces a suspension of one to six matches plus a fine. UOL first reported it.
The incident followed Memphis going off after 22 minutes with right thigh pain during the move that produced Corinthians’ equaliser. He returned for the second half, was seen with the phone and was then reprimanded by the coaching staff.
Prosecutors argued a high-profile athlete could influence behaviour, normalising devices on the bench, weakening disciplinary control and enabling improper communications. They said it could also make policing the rules harder for referees and organisers.
Post-match, Memphis said on social media he used the phone solely to contact the Netherlands medical staff, having been called up for March’s FIFA dates. He added he returned to the touchline, despite the injury, to support the team.
The case also names brand and business manager Leonardo Carnevale and technical observer Mauro da Silva, after referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima reported offensive protests outside the officials’ dressing room. They face suspensions of one to six matches and fines from R$100 to R$100,000. No hearing date has been set.
