VfB Stuttgart are poised to sign Feyenoord winger Leo Sauer after overtaking Hoffenheim in the chase. According to Get German Football News, an agreement worth €12.5m plus bonuses is in place, with a contract to 2031 pending a medical.

The picture shifted quickly. Hoffenheim had a verbal agreement with the 20-year-old after moving on from Red Bull Salzburg attacker Adam Daghim. Stuttgart entered later and topped the Sinsheim club’s proposals.

Stuttgart’s push is shaped by recent lessons. The club want to avoid a repeat of last summer’s frantic search after Nick Woltemade completed a late move to Newcastle United. With Bilal El Khannouss and Jamie Leweling potentially attracting major bids before the deadline, Sauer offers cover on both flanks and behind the striker while strengthening Sebastian Hoeneß’ squad immediately.

Sauer posted four goals and two assists in 29 outings for Feyenoord last season. His pace, tight control and knack for finding pockets between the lines make him an appealing fit.

His arrival would not close Stuttgart’s pursuit of Wolfsburg striker Dzenan Pejcinovic. The supervisory board has reportedly approved funds for both deals, and a package exceeding €22m is being prepared for Pejcinovic.

That approval comes with a caveat, the club still need significant sales this summer, with El Khannouss and Angelo Stiller seen as leading candidates to depart. If the medical brings no issues, Sauer would be the first piece of an ambitious attacking double move.
