SportDog reports that Sunderland have an interest in Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza following his involvement in the controversial World Cup round-of-16 tie with France.

Paraguay, with current Black Cats star Omar Alderete and former Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron in the XI, went out as a Kylian Mbappe penalty decided the game. Their disruptive approach drew strong post-match criticism.

Galarza, 24, was among those scrutinised after a first-half clash with Mbappe that BBC pundit Joe Hart felt could have warranted a red card. France coach Didier Deschamps said he would not criticise the referee, noted France had three bookings amid numerous incidents, and stressed qualification was what mattered.

Galarza plays for CA Talleres in Argentina and previously spent two years with Genk, making qualifying appearances in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. He has more than two years left on his Talleres contract.

The report names Olympiakos and Getafe as leading contenders for his signature, with Monza and Strasbourg also in the frame. Sunderland are said to be among several European suitors.
