Sunderland are set for a seven-figure revenue boost this summer as a clutch of players prepare for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
According to Sunderland Echo, Noah Sadiki and Melker Ellborg strengthened their cases on Tuesday by being in the DR Congo and Sweden squads that won play-offs against Jamaica and Poland. The club have already banked money from recent qualifiers after FIFA widened its Club Benefit Programme.
FIFA distributed around $209 million after Qatar 2022, roughly $10,000 per player per day at the tournament. The pot has risen to about $355 million this cycle and, for the first time, covers qualification windows.
If fit, Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador. Sadiki is a DR Congo regular, while Ellborg now has a strong chance with Sweden.
Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are in contention with the Netherlands, Chemsdine Talbi seems likely for Morocco and Wilson Isidor will travel with Haiti after his recent debut and goal. Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could also feature, though their Sunderland futures are uncertain.
If all 12 players do make their World Cup squads, Sunderland are guaranteed a payout for the fortnight-long group stage and the preparation time that precedes it. On a conservative three-week stint, each would have earned around £200,000 under the 2022 system, likely slightly higher now and more if nations progress. That 12-player scenario would have been worth roughly £2,250,000 in 2022, a welcome boost.
