Wilson Isidor has confirmed he will represent Haiti at international level, issuing a 148-word message before Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear trip to Newcastle United.

In a post addressed to fans and the Haitian community, the forward said he had taken time to reflect before accepting the Grenadiers call. He expressed pride at joining the selection and a desire to honour the nation and its diaspora. The decision follows months of messages urging him to choose Haiti.

The timing comes as Sunderland prepare for Sunday at St James’ Park, after a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton in which ex-Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh scored.

Head coach Régis Le Bris said Isidor was unavailable at the weekend due to an injury and that the squad are on the edge physically. He explained they chose caution rather than risking the striker, and took a similar view with Brian Brobbey whose workload was already high.

Several players are now racing to be fit. Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele missed Brighton but could return, and Reinildo Mandava is expected to train this week. Le Bris said Dan Ballard felt hamstring discomfort that they hope is not serious, Enzo Le Fee might be ready for Newcastle, Nilson Angulo faces at least four to six weeks, and Mukiele is improving but any risk could cost up to eight weeks.
