Sunderland opened pre-season with a 5-1 win at York City as Regis Le Bris urged patience in a slow window. Thomas Meunier, 34, signed last week and will link up in August after his World Cup commitments with Belgium.

Sunderland Echo understands that winger Timur Tutierov is now expected to stay following a change of stance, and that several Championship clubs are interested in Anthony Patterson, though none has met Sunderland’s valuation.

Le Bris said this summer differs, with probably six or seven additions rather than 14 last year, built on a strong base. He added the market is slow, so it is better to wait than rush decisions.

Romaine Mundle missed York as a precaution. He trained last week but, after surgery, it was too early to play and his workload is being managed following two significant hamstring injuries last season.

Dan Ballard will rejoin full training next week and is due to make his first appearance in America on the United States tour. He had ankle surgery after his 2025/26 campaign ended early following a red card in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

Academy striker Marcus Neill has signed his first professional contract. The son of former Australia international Lucas, he has been prolific since arriving from Liverpool two years ago and featured in the 1-1 draw at South Shields. He is set for a major role in the academy schedule this season.
