Elisabeth Terland wrote her name into Manchester United history with a sparkling hat-trick in a 3-0 win that sent the club into the Women’s Champions League group stage for the first time.

The Norwegian striker punished her former side Brann with a ruthless display at Leigh Sports Village, overturning last week’s narrow 1-0 first-leg defeat in style.

Terland set the tone inside nine minutes, capitalising on a defensive error to smash home. Four minutes later she doubled the advantage, peeling away at the back post to nod in from a corner.

United rarely looked under threat thereafter. Jess Park went close, and Terland herself clipped the woodwork before the interval, but the hosts already had one foot in the next round.

The decisive moment arrived on 63 minutes: a perfectly-timed run in behind left her clear, and she calmly slotted past Selma Panengstuen to complete the treble and seal United’s progress.

It marked a comfortable evening for United, who have beat PSV, Hammarby and now Brann to reach Friday’s draw. The challenge now will be juggling European football with the relentless demands of the Women’s Super League, where his team sit top after two wins from two.

As for Brann, their campaign continues in the inaugural Europa Cup, but they were second best here throughout. United march on, with history made and tougher nights ahead, but a clear sense that they belong on this stage.
