Terrence Mashego releaves what did Gavin Hunt tell the players befor facing Chiefs!
As Durban City prepares for a pivotal Friday night clash against a resurgent Kaizer Chiefs, defender Terrence Mashego has shed light on the tactical mantra emanating from the training ground. Under the lights of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, his team will face an Amakhosi side buoyed by their recent CAF Confederation Cup success, while simultaneously looking to erase the memory of their own Carling Knockout Cup exit at the hands of Richards Bay.
The central directive from head coach Gavin Hunt, according to Mashego, is unequivocal: fortify the defense. The coach has pinpointed a concerning pattern of conceding goals, making defensive discipline the non-negotiable foundation for their game plan. For Mashego, this philosophy is the key to unlocking a positive result against the Soweto giants.
He explained the team's mindset, revealing, “Definitely, we want to make sure that they don’t score because the coach has been emphasising that we have been conceding too many goals.” This focus on a clean sheet is not merely about prevention; it's seen as the pathway to victory. “We just need to make sure that we keep a clean-sheet because if we do that, we stand a good chance of winning the game.”
Mashego also outlined the psychological battle they hope to wage. He believes that stifling Chiefs' attack, especially in front of their own fans, could be a decisive factor. “If you play Chiefs in front of that crowd and you make sure that they don’t score in the first half, chances are that they might be frustrated and come in numbers.” This anticipated urgency from the visitors is precisely what Durban City aims to exploit. He concluded with strategic optimism, stating, “Definitely, if they come in numbers, there will be spaces and we stand a good chance to score.”
