The Saints have wasted no time in seeking a replacement for their Premier League-bound midfielder
It has been revealed how much Southampton are expected to pay for Nurnberg midfielder Casper Jander, who looks set to be their replacement for the outgoing Mateus Fernandes.
News of the fee, as well as the move itself, was revealed by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
It follows news that West Ham are on the verge of signing Saints midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the Portuguese playmaker heading to the London Stadium in a £42 million deal after just one year on the south coast.
The Saints are wasting no time, and sparing no expense, in seeking their replacement for Fernandes though, with an agreement already reached for his successor.
According to Plettenberg, Southampton are set to spend €12 million (£10.35 million) as an initial fee on the 22-year-old midfielder.
The journalist reveals that alone is a record transfer for Nurnberg, but the deal also comes with “substantial add-ons”, that are yet to be divulged.
It followed the original news from the same journalist that full agreement with the German side had been reached, with verbal agreement from Jander.
He is now set to undergo his medical ahead of a permanent deal, as the Saints move quickly to have him in the building before the end of the window.
Jander looks to be the replacement for departing midfielder Fernandes, who is fancied by West Ham.
A deal has been agreed, based on a report from Sky Sports, with the Premier League club set to pay an initial £38m for the Portuguese midfielder’s services.
It also includes £4 million in add-ons for the Saints and The Athletic also claim that there is a sell-on clause of 15 per cent in the deal, maximising the chance for potential further earnings.
There was late interest from Frankfurt, according to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, but the Hammers have managed to get the deal over the line.
Having Fernandes’ replacement heading to St Mary’s just as another player is leaving looks like strong, well-thought-out business from the Saints, especially given the fact we’re approaching the end of the window and dealings can get hectic.
Nobody at Southampton would have been keen to lose a talent like Fernandes, but following their relegation, keeping a 21-year-old with that much promise in the building was always likely to be difficult.
In Jander, they look to have tied up a shrewd signing for a similarly-aged player with bags of potential.
He is yet to play outside of the German second tier yet, but in that division last year he netted three goals and provided nine assists from midfield, a commanding influence well beyond that to be expected of someone with his age and experience.
There will, of course, be a sharp learning curve for the German youth international as he adjusts to the physicality of English football, but the Saints are well-versed in handling such transitions, as they proved with Fernandes.
Their sale of the Portuguese player is around triple what they’re paying for Jander, so they’ve got their replacement sealed with cash to spare, all while minimising the disruption to the squad as much as possible.
