As the showdown between the two European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Arsenal London draws closer, former international goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has commented on the role of the favorites – and sees a particular strength in his former club.
Wednesday evening’s Champions League clash (kick-off 21:00) between Munich and the Gunners is eagerly awaited. Both teams lead their national leagues and are regarded as title contenders in the top flight, where both clubs are also top of the table in the current league phase with twelve points from four games. As Jens Lehmann said in an interview with the Münchner Merkur and tz, he sees slight advantages for the English side.
Although the former Arsenal keeper praised the current level of both clubs: „I expect a very close game,“ said the 56-year-old, he also emphasized that the Gunners currently excel in two areas in particular: „Arsenal currently have the best defence in the world.“

In addition to the defensive quality, Lehmann cites the home game at Emirates Stadium as a factor. At the same time, he attests to Munich’s clearly recognisable development. „At Bayern, many players can score goals, that’s a strength,“ says Lehmann. In addition, the professionals seem „fitter […] than the opponents in the Bundesliga. You didn’t have that feeling in previous years.“
The former goalkeeper had special praise for one of the new signings. „Diaz has the South American attitude, I like that,“ he said of the attacker, who scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain. Lehmann described his absence due to a suspension as „a weakening“.
How true the former international’s assessment proves to be will be shown on Wednesday evening in London – when two of the strongest teams in Europe measure their strength.
