Vincent Kompany and his Bayern face their next big challenge on Wednesday against Arsenal, an opponent that the coach has singled out for special praise.
After the 6:2 home win against Freiburg, FC Bayern immediately turned their attention to the upcoming top match in the Champions League. In the league phase, they will face Arsenal London, who are level on points – and Vincent Kompany expressed his great respect for the upcoming opponent.
After the Freiburg game, the coach explained with regard to the Gunners: „They are the best team in Europe at set-pieces. I think that’s a good challenge. I don’t know if there are many better teams in Europe than Arsenal at the moment. We’re looking forward to the game.“ However, Munich have shown weaknesses at set-pieces of all things recently.
Kompany was therefore also self-critical, having conceded two goals against Freiburg from set-pieces – a pattern that had already emerged in the previous match against Union Berlin. At the post-match press conference, he said: „I’m calm. We made mistakes as a team in these phases. We shouldn’t hide, but show personality and character to defend them.“
Despite the defensive weakness, the coach was optimistic: „We are also strong on attacking set-pieces, we scored from a corner today. We just have to stay calm and work on getting out of this phase and show that we are good in this area too. I am confident that we will solve this,“ explained Kompany.
Central defender Jonathan Tah also commented on the game: „Of course we weren’t happy with the situation after going 2-0 down. We knew we had to shift up a gear or two – and we did that quickly.“ Looking ahead to the game against Arsenal, the 29-year-old continued: „We have to be more alert as a team in set-piece situations. We’re really looking forward to the game at Arsenal; it’s something special. We’re going in with full conviction and want to get the three points. It’s going to be a very exciting game.“
