AS Monaco were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG after a 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, a result that again exposed recurring flaws. The story of their slide was written in the numbers.

According to L'Équipe, across their last six European campaigns Monaco have not progressed beyond the first knockout hurdle, with exits arriving twice in the group stage, three times in the play-offs and once in the round of 16.

They are the first French club to be eliminated twice by another French side in Europe, by PSG this season and by Marseille in the 1998-99 UEFA Cup round of 16.

Monaco have gone out in each of their last five knockout ties in Europe since beating Dortmund in the 2016-17 Champions League quarter-finals. They have also been eliminated in all nine ties after losing the first leg, qualifiers included.

Discipline has bitten hard. Their nine red cards in all competitions this season are the most among the big five leagues, with Mamadou Coulibaly collecting his second of the campaign to join Thilo Kehrer and Alexandre Golovin.

There was one bright note. Jordan Teze’s strike was Monaco’s third goal this season in second-half added time in the Champions League, after Bruges and City, their highest such total in a single edition for 28 years in 1997-98.
