Daniel Peretz arrived in January on loan from Bayern Munich after half a campaign at Hamburg, a mid-season fix who steadied Southampton at the back. By summer the club made it permanent, a four-year deal for around £6m and the number one shirt for 2026/27.

According to Sainstmarching.com, Bayern sporting chief Max Eberl said Peretz “immediately established himself as number one at Southampton” and had “found a new sporting home there”.

The numbers explained why. He kept six clean sheets in 13 games on loan, posting a 78.6% save rate and an average rating of seven point four three on FotMob, a mark few Championship keepers bettered.

On Friday night he started against Eintracht Braunschweig, the second fixture of Southampton’s German friendlies, with his status now confirmed. He worked behind Mads Roerslev, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Jack Stephens and Welington.

The wider context is stark. Southampton begin 2026/27 bottom of the Championship and four points behind after the Spygate ruling. In a promotion race that could be tight, a reliable keeper could be worth even more.

Tonda Eckert has chased stability in goal all summer and, in Peretz, now has it along with experience at 25, having backed up Manuel Neuer at Bayern and kept goal for Israel. With the Shea Charles saga ongoing and a striker search unfinished, at least between the posts Southampton look settled.
