Reds have shipped 11 goals in eight Premier League games this season
Jamie Carragher has said Liverpool cannot retain the Premier League this season until they address their defensive issues.
Liverpool’s struggles continued on Sunday as they slumped to a fourth straight defeat across all competitions after losing at home to arch-rivals Manchester United.
Cody Gakpo did pull the Reds level in the 78th minute, cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal, but just like previous Premier League losses to Crystal Palace and Chelsea, Arne Slot’s side conceded a late winner.
Harry Maguire who rose highest to head home a Bruno Fernandes cross to pile even more misery on the reigning champions of England.
Liverpool have now conceded at least two goals in each of their last three league games and despite creating plenty of chances at Anfield, Carragher is of the opinion his former club are not at the races defensively and has warned it could cost them.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "Listen, in two games time they will start going in but when you say Liverpool's stats were a lot better than Manchester United's, they were always going to be before the game.
"Liverpool are a much better team than Manchester United, so it shouldn't be a case of 'oh we were unlucky, look at how many chances we had or our xG was more or we had more touches in the box'.
"You expect that, Liverpool are a much better team than Manchester United.
"So if Manchester United were going to come to Anfield and win, it was always going to be like that. Maybe getting a late goal, a little bit of luck here and there.
"But Manchester United had chances in the first-half.
"Liverpool are just not at the races at all defensively and until they fix that, they can't win the league."
