‘This mob really need a banning from Celtic Park’

As you’ll note from the name of that excellent Facebook group, it’s partial, biased towards Celtic and will defend our club when necessary. It revels in both Celtic successes and theRangers woes and the opposite will no doubt be true for similar Facebook groups that are for the supporters of the latest Ibrox club.
It’s the same with fan media with both clubs having their blogs, podcasts and social media platforms and the supporters each take their relative positions depending on which team they support.

However for the mainstream media it should perhaps be different. Yet if you watch BBC Sportscene you can count the number of former players of a Rangers club they have on, even after most were hijacked to close the 13 points gap on Celtic that the big Belgian Waffler left. Even when there’s a rare sighting of a Celtic player in there it’s usually someone like Scott Allan who is of course a fellow Rangers supporter!
The Daily Record and Sunday Mail used to sell an incredible number of copies but those days are long gone. These days it’s a tiny fraction and much of what they do is achieved through their digital presence and usual AI to write stories or maybe just their headlines. That story mentioned above has two writers credited, one who title is Sports Trends Editor.

The purpose of that is to get the maximum audience and it’s certainly true that the headline is the most important aspect of any article that’s published. Any of the Celtic sites, including this one will tell you the same thing.
The shock value of the headline ‘Fuming Peter Schmeichel snubs Celtic critics of son Kasper as bitter row rumbles on’ achieves exactly what the Reach PLC owned title wants. From their point of view it’s perfect. It mentions Celtic so ‘reaches’ Celtic eyes, it’s anti-Celtic as Mark points out above, so it reaches theRangers eyes. It mentions to famous footballers both with wide awareness in world football so will get clicks from outside of Scotland.

Yes it’s inaccurate and intentionally so. What’s the downside of that? None because they know you’ll maybe be outraged but will still click when they do it again, and again. Mark might become so annoyed he posts about it and The Celtic Star picks up on his observation and posts an article about it which in turn may well have you reading something you’ve not already come across.
Why you may ask don’t they do this to theRangers by having similarly misleading headlines about them? Who knows. They probably do but not to the same extent. There’s their own bias, the old laptop loyal brigade etc , could be that. Of the hassle factor. The hacks know what’s coming if they dare say or write anything too negative about them. Consider for instance how the various disgraceful bottle and coin throwing incidents at Ibrox are always seen as Old Firm (sic) issues.

Both as bad as each other when it’s theRangers in the wrong but on the few occasions when it’s the Celtic side of things then we get it full barrel. We actually saw that happen at the weekend with the Celtic supporter at Ibrox letting our support down badly.

As for any prospect of that mob getting banned from Celtic Park, not a chance of that happening. Brendan might refuse to talk to them now and again, as he did for a spell last season, but the club will never do anything. You might think that with the emergence of decent quality Celtic fan media sites, podcasts, video channels and so on, coupled with the decline in newspaper sales that Celtic would be less reliant on working with the hacks. The opposite it actually the case.
Many of the Celtic fan media outlets have drifted away. The ones that remain get the odd scrap, coupled with broken promises. Celtic fan media sites can send a photographer to every Scottish Premiership ground except one. Any guesses?
A wee clue. Loads of us will be there tomorrow.
Here’s the link to the ‘Fuming Peter Schmeichel snubs Celtic critics of son Kasper as bitter row rumbles on’ story which is basically a dad saying he’ll never speak to a Danish media outlet because ion they way they treated his son.
