Eintracht beat the Wolves 2-1, with Oscar Højlund and Arnaud Kalimuendo netting for the Eagles in the first half.

Two changesAfter the 2-2 draw against Köln last Sunday, Farès Chaibi and Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab were recalled to the starting line-up in place of Ritsu Doan (ill) and Ansgar Knauff (bench).Eintracht fortunate In an even opening period, Frankfurt and in particular Michael Zetterer were lucky in the 12th minute. The Eintracht goalkeeper took a heavy touch, allowing Mohammed Amoura to close him down. The ball came through to Patrick Wimmer but, with the goal gaping, he slipped and the chance went begging.

Chance for KalimuendoEintracht then went up the other end and Oscar Højlund set up Arnaud Kalimuendo, who was denied by Kamil Grabara at close range.

Brilliant goal to break deadlock Albert Riera’s side were growing into the game and took the lead after 21 minutes. Amaimouni-Echghouyab squared the ball to Højlund on the edge of the box and the Dane fired an unstoppable strike into the left corner from 18 metres. Kalimuendo doublesThe Eagles were in the ascendancy now and made it 2-0 after 32 minutes. From a free kick, Jonny Burkardt’s shot was saved by Grabara, but the Wolves goalkeeper couldn’t do anything to stop Kalimuendo tapping in the rebound from six metres. Shortly before half-time, Burkardt missed a good opportunity to extend the lead from close range, meaning it remained 2-0 at the break.

Eintracht come under pressure Wolfsburg came out of the dressing room with intent and initially forced Frankfurt into a lot of defending. Zetterer tipped Lovro Majer’s free kick onto the bar in the 49th minute, before also reacting well to Christian Eriksen’s dangerous corner five minutes later. The Eagles struggled to free themselves from the hosts’ pressure and were grateful that the Wolves failed to take advantage of further good opportunities for Aaron Zehnter (55’) and Eriksen (68’).Theate aims too high With 73 minutes gone, Eintracht had their first chance of the second half when Arthur Theate had space to go for goal from 18 metres, but fired over the target.

Pejcinovic reduces deficitRiera’s men remained under pressure until full time and were denied a clean sheet in the seventh minute of stoppage time, when Wolfsburg substitute Dzenan Pejcinovic headed in to make it 2-1. However, the final whistle went seconds later as the Eagles collected an important three points to keep their hopes of a European place alive.
