Matchday 25’s afternoon kick-offs delivered three takeaways: Wolfsburg’s worsening plight, Deniz Undav’s claim to start for Germany and Bayer Leverkusen’s uneven Arsenal tune-up.

Saturday brought five fixtures, notably Freiburg v Leverkusen and Wolfsburg v Hamburg, plus Stuttgart at Mainz. According to Get German Football News, these were the three things we learnt.

Already in the relegation zone after wins for St. Pauli and Werder Bremen last week, Wolfsburg missed a chance to climb with both rivals playing tomorrow. In a match of three penalties, Christian Eriksen scored for die Wölfe, but Luka Vuskovic and Jean-Luc Dompé converted to give Hamburg a 2-1 win. With a non-penalty xG of 1.05 and only Bremen and Gladbach left among direct rivals, this could prove costly unless a head coaching change is made sooner or later.

Deniz Undav strengthened his case after a week of questionable remarks from Julian Nagelsmann about Germany’s summer set-up, scoring and assisting in Stuttgart’s 2-2 draw at Mainz. On 19 goals and 12 assists in 34 games, with Nick Woltemade struggling at Newcastle and Kai Havertz only just back from injury, it is a fair argument he should start, either up front or behind with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

Leverkusen’s Arsenal preparation was sub-optimal, as they drew 3-3 at Freiburg. They twice came from behind to reach 2-2 at half-time, then after Martin Terrier made it 3-2 they conceded a late Matthias Ginter equaliser, with an even later Ginter winner ruled offside. Die Werkself looked too open.
