Leeds United return to Wembley on Sunday for an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, reviving memories of 1972 when Billy Bremner lifted the trophy. As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, lifelong supporter Heidi Haigh still treasures that day.
It is 39 years since Leeds last made the semi-finals, a loss to Coventry City at Hillsborough, and their prior Wembley final brought defeat to Sunderland a year after 1972.
That 1972 side is revered, Allan Clarke scoring the winner with Eddie Gray, Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton and Peter Lorimer among Don Revie’s team.
"It was the first time I'd ever been to Wembley. Seeing the ground was just amazing," said Haigh, who recalled communal singing, Tommy Steele in white backing Leeds, and hymns that still send tingles down her spine.
Leeds were then among Europe’s best, but Daniel Farke’s team are fighting for top-flight survival. With safety largely secured, they face a Chelsea side who have not beaten them this season, and victory would take them back for the final.
Wembley has since been unkind, with defeat the following year and six more losses across the Charity Shield and Championship play-offs. Yet Farke has delivered a club-record 100-point Championship season and a recent 2-1 league win at Old Trafford, their first there since 1981.
