Tottenham Hotspur Forward Mathys Tel Reflects on Champions League Omission

Tottenham Hotspur striker Mathys Tel has spoken candidly about the disappointment of missing out on the club’s Champions League squad for the group stage. Despite admitting the decision “hurts”, Tel has chosen to accept manager Thomas Frank’s call with respect and determination.

Tel’s Champions League Exclusion

The 19-year-old Frenchman was one of several high-profile players omitted from the squad list. Radu Dragusin, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Yves Bissouma were also left out as Frank weighed up his options for Europe.

Tel joined Spurs permanently this summer in a £29.8 million deal after impressing during his loan spell from Bayern Munich. His arrival was viewed as a statement of intent by Tottenham Hotspur, yet his absence from the competition raises questions about squad management and the priorities Thomas Frank must balance between domestic and European football.

When asked how the decision was communicated, Tel explained to Le Telegramme: “Quite simply, with respect. He called me, he simply told me his choice and then you could see the list appear on social media. It’s clear that when you’re not on a list, it definitely hurts, but I’m someone who stays pretty positive, no matter the situation, because I think I’ve worked a lot on the mental aspect. So today it’s definitely a disappointment, I would have liked to be there. But the coach’s choice is the coach’s choice, we can only respect it and we’re going to work to come back in the best possible way.”

Frank’s Balancing Act

Thomas Frank has a reputation for building resilient and disciplined sides, and his first few months at Tottenham Hotspur have reinforced that impression. His decision to exclude Tel, along with several established names, highlights the tactical trade-offs required when finalising a squad. Depth is vital in a season where Spurs are competing on multiple fronts, but so too is balance, particularly when UEFA rules restrict numbers.

For Frank, this is about more than simply rewarding form. It is about shaping a group that fits his vision for how Spurs should play. The inclusion or exclusion of players is therefore less a reflection of talent and more a consideration of balance, versatility and tactical necessity.

Tel’s Mindset Going Forward

What stands out is Tel’s maturity in handling such a setback. He did not rail against the decision, nor did he question the authority of his coach. Instead, he expressed both his disappointment and his readiness to keep working hard. That attitude will be vital for a young player hoping to become a central figure at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs supporters have already seen glimpses of Tel’s ability. His pace, directness and composure in front of goal give him qualities that can make a difference at the highest level. While this Champions League chapter is a setback, it may yet serve as fuel for his progress under Thomas Frank.

Outlook for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur’s European campaign begins with questions over the squad’s depth, but Frank’s pragmatic selections show that long-term stability is being prioritised. For Mathys Tel, the message is clear: keep working, stay ready and trust that opportunities will come. For Spurs fans, his attitude will be as reassuring as his talent.
