Bad news for Tottenham ahead of facing Liverpool this weekend

Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha have been ruled out against Liverpool after suffering concussion injuries during Tottenham’s 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The pair suffered a clash of heads and were removed deep into stoppage time at the Metropolitano after receiving lengthy treatment on the pitch.

Romero attempted to carry on before being substituted, while Palhinha came straight off as Spurs ended the game with nine men.

Romero has yet to play a league game under Tudor, having only just returned from a four-game suspension after being sent off against Manchester United last month.

FA concussion protocols state that if a player is judged to be concussed, then they should begin a six-stage 'return to play' process, which starts with an initial 48-hour period of rest with minimal physical and 'cognitive' activities.

With Spurs, who are one point above the relegation zone, set to take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, fears were raised that neither Romero nor Palhinha would be available to play, having been withdrawn against Atletico on Tuesday evening.

Asked whether Romero and Palhinha would be fit, interim head coach Igor Tudor said: "No, no, no they (Romero and Palhinha) are out.

“I don't know how much (they will be out), I think, they will be back for sure, for the Nottingham Forest, maybe even for the Champions League.”

Tudor has also confirmed that Yves Bissouma will miss the trip to Anfield but Conor Gallagher should be fine despite suffering with a fever.

“Micky is also out. Bissouma is out,” Tudor added.

“Conor has some fever. But probably he will be in. So we have again a lot of problems to make the first eleven. This is how it is in this club. This happens all the time."

Left-back Destiny Udogie had been expected to return from a hamstring injury, with former manager Thomas Frank stating on February 9 that Udogie would be out for between four to five weeks.

Tudor, though, admitted the Italian international should be available for selection against Nottingham Forest next week.
