Manchester City may face a block in their efforts to offload Stefan Ortega this summer with only a handful of transfer markets still open on the continent.
The German goalkeeper has long been linked with a possible departure from the Etihad Stadium after making clear his ambitions to secure a first-choice role elsewhere, and amid recent arrivals into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad in his position.
While City remained keen to retain Ortega earlier on in the market, the landscape has significantly changed since following the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma and James Trafford – who are expected to hold down the first and second choice positions.
Ortega, who arrived at Manchester City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022, quickly earned a reputation as one of the best back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League, playing a key role in the top-flight title success of 2024.
The German’s strong shot-stopping ability have been vital assets, but with Donnarumma now arriving from Paris Saint-Germain, Ortega’s pathway to regular football at Manchester City has narrowed significantly.
The issue for City is that most of Europe’s major leagues have now closed their summer windows, leaving fewer destinations available for Ortega should a deal be pursued. This is where Turkey’s Süper Lig could offer a solution.
According to the information of Turkish outlet Sporx, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Trabzonspor lodged a bid for Stefan Ortega, before Manchester United then offered the club the opportunity to secure Andre Onana on loan for the season.
That development has placed Trabzonspor in a difficult position, weighing up the possibility of acquiring Ortega on a permanent basis or taking Andre Onana on a short-term loan from their fierce rivals.
The decision will likely depend on finances, squad planning, and the club’s long-term strategy between securing a reliable stop-gap or investing in a goalkeeper with resale value. For Manchester City, they remain open to Ortega’s exit.
Should Trabzonspor pursue Ortega, City may finally complete their summer uncertainty in the goalkeeping ranks, while an Andre Onana deal could offer Manchester United the chance to relieve pressure on their No.1 following a difficult debut season.
