Shea Charles struck from outside the box in the 13th minute to set Southampton on course to beat Oxford United 2-0.
After a corner, Cameron Archer rolled the ball into his path and Charles whipped a right-footed finish into the top right, handing the Saints early control.
His set piece delivery then fashioned another chance when Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed narrowly wide from Charles' corner (43.).
After the restart, he forced Jamie Cumming into a save from range (68.). He drew another stop with a central effort as the visitors tried to rally (80.).
Charles finished with three shots on target and completed 75 of 81 passes, including 23 successful final third balls, which kept Saints playing high up the pitch and sustained pressure on Oxford United.
The Saints visit Arsenal in the FA Cup next. Oxford United host Hull in the Championship.
