Jordan James has returned to Leicester City for further medical assessment following an injury he suffered with Wales

Leicester City want as close to a full-strength squad as possible at the business end of the Championship season amid their relegation battle.

The Foxes have just seven games left to rescue their second-tier status, and currently sit in the relegation zone thanks to their six-point deduction.

Gary Rowett's men host Preston North End on Good Friday before travelling to already relegated Sheffield Wednesday on Easter Monday.

Leicester have won just two Championship fixtures in 2026, and were unable to take momentum from a 2-0 victory over Bristol City on 10 March, as they went on to lose to Queens Park Rangers and draw with Watford in their last two games.

Midfielder Jordan James is Leicester's top scorer in the Championship this term, having notched 10 goals in 29 second-tier appearances.

The 21-year-old recently showed his quality in the final third by producing an assist in the win over Bristol City before scoring in the 3-1 defeat to QPR.

James' strong performances for Rowett's side earned him a place in Wales' starting 11 for their World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week.

However, the midfielder appeared to suffer an Achilles issue before being replaced by Swansea City's Liam Cullen in the 56th minute, while Craig Bellamy's men went on to suffer a penalty shootout defeat.

As reported by Leicestershire Live, James has returned to the Foxes for further medical assessment, and Bellamy added: "JJ unfortunately got injured during the game. He tried to play on, but it was just too painful so he’s gone back to Leicester."

The former Birmingham City man suffered a hamstring injury earlier this term, which kept him out of action throughout most of February.

He has only made three starts since returning from that setback, but demonstrated his class with his goal contributions against Bristol City and QPR.

As reported by Leicestershire Live, Foxes boss Rowett will provide a further update on James' fitness at his press conference on Wednesday.

Leicester need their star man available for as many games as possible amid their relegation battle, and will be more likely to drop to League One if he is unavailable for the majority of, or all of their remaining fixtures.

The King Power Stadium club began the season with aspirations of sealing an immediate Premier League return, but have instead found themselves in a position where they will celebrate retaining their Championship status, should they avoid relegation to the third tier.

Rowett's men have some favourable fixtures in their run-in, as they face rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday and fellow strugglers Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers.

Leicester's clash with Blackburn on the final day of the season could be particularly vital for both clubs, who are former Premier League title winners.

Less favourably, the Foxes also face play-off hopefuls Hull City and automatic promotion chasers Millwall in back-to-back April fixtures.

Rowett's men will have a significantly greater chance of beating teams around them, and some of the best sides in the Championship if James is available.
