A new leader in the race for the European Golden Boot has on Saturday been confirmed.
This comes owing to Kylian Mbappé’s exploits in Real Madrid’s final La Liga outing of the campaign, against Real Sociedad.
Los Blancos marked their return to action a short time ago, welcoming Imanol’s Sociedad to Spain’s capital as part of the gameweek 38 fixtures in Spain’s top-flight.
The aforementioned Mbappé was in from the off at the Santiago Bernabéu, leading the line in Carlo Ancelotti’s final game on the hosts’ bench.
And the Frenchman went on to close out a productive debut campaign in La Liga with his latest pair of goals.
First, after seeing his initial first-half penalty effort kept out, Mbappé was on hand to slot home on the rebound. And he was back at it again late on, lashing home a brilliant left-footed strike at the near post.
As much means that the former Paris Saint-Germain man has overtaken Sporting CP standout Viktor Gyökeres in the race for the European Golden Boot.
The 26-year-old now sits on 62 points, ahead of 2nd-placed Gyökeres on 58.5.
The one player who could still have a say when it comes to the award’s winner is Mohamed Salah, who, in the case of netting a hat-trick for Liverpool against Crystal Palace on Sunday, would join Mbappé in top spot.
