Gerard Martin has started pre-season exactly where he left off, looking calm, reliable and increasingly difficult for Hansi Flick to leave out of FC Barcelona’s strongest defensive line.

According to Mundo Deportivo, CE Europa midfielder Marc Angles identified Martin as the Barcelona player who surprised him most during Friday’s 4-1 friendly victory, praising the defender’s consistency and describing almost everything he did as perfect.

Martin started alongside Andreas Christensen and delivered another assured performance on the left side of central defence.

His most important contribution came in the build-up to Barcelona’s opening goal. The 24-year-old broke through Europa’s defensive structure with a precise pass in behind, allowing Ibrahim Diarra to finish the move.

That moment captured what Flick values in him. Martin does not simply defend his area. He receives the ball under pressure, plays forward with purpose and helps Barcelona progress without taking unnecessary risks.

His defensive work was equally solid, while his physical condition suggested that he has returned from the summer break ready to compete immediately.

Barcelona may already have their defensive solution

Martin made 26 starts last season and gradually established himself as Pau Cubarsi’s regular partner. His development was strong enough to earn him consideration for Spain’s World Cup squad, even though he ultimately missed out on the final selection.

He may not carry the reputation of some of the names discussed in the market, but Flick clearly trusts him. Martin offers balance as a natural left-footer, understands the coach’s high defensive line and rarely complicates simple situations.

The praise from an opponent matters because it reflects how difficult he is to play against. Martin’s strength lies in preventing dangerous situations before they fully develop.

One friendly will not settle Barcelona’s defensive hierarchy, but it reinforced an important point. Gerard Martin is no longer merely a useful squad player. He is becoming one of Flick’s most dependable defenders, and any new signing may have to displace him rather than simply move ahead of him.
